Co-founder and coordinator of the Literary Club at Podkrepa Bulgarian-Macedonian Association

On January 27, 2013, a group of enthusiasts gathered together at Podkrepa Bulgarian-Macedonian Association with the idea of establishing a literary club. The club was called “Bulgarski Iskrets.” This initiative to found a literary club came to life during the first year of Bulgarche Cultural and Educational Program activity at Podkrepa. The club’s founders were closely involved in the work with children and the entire organization.

From 2013 to 2019, the discussions were held once per month (October to May). In 2020-2022, the meetings became virtual and less frequent. The club did not restart its meetings in person yet.

More information about Podkrepa and the Literary club is available in the website, the Facebook page and in this blog.

Co-founder and coordinator of Glagolnitsata Society for Poetry and Literature (2014 –)

The idea for establishing the Glagolnitsata Society for Poetry and Literature was introduced to the Bulgarian Cultural and Heritage Center of Seattle’s Board in January 2014. Then, on February 15, the first meeting took place in a community hall in Bellevue. At this first gathering, enthusiasts from Seattle shared their vision of the Society and suggested topics and authors for discussions. The poetry and literature lovers decided to meet regularly once per month and discuss classical and new works of Bulgarian poets and writers.

Glagolnitsata began coordinating its activities with Bulgarski Iskrets Literary Club at Podkrepa, Portland. Thanks to the joint efforts, the first project was designed, and the first grant was received from the Bulgarian Ministry of Culture (2017). This grant covered the travel expenses of Bulgarian poet and writer, songwriter-and-guitar-player Svetla Georgieva for her coming to the United States. With this grant and the help and financial support of many, Glagolnitsata and Bulgarski Iskrets organized Svetla Georgieva’s two-weeks tour in the United States and hosted two of her recitals – in Seattle and Portland.

From 2014 to 2019, the discussions took place in various libraries, private homes, and tea and coffee houses in Seattle. This Bulgarian Society established partner relationships with the American Romanian Cultural Society within its first year. These two met in 2914 to discuss the works and legacy of Mircea Eliade. This first gathering set the foundation for a long-lasting partnership and friendship.

The situation in the world (2020-) interrupted the meetings of the Society in person. But, at the same time, the advantage of technology brought a whole new array of opportunities for meeting authors and publishers from across the States, Bulgaria, and elsewhere.

More information is available in the Facebook page and the Facebook group of Glagolnitsata society. Also in the Facebook page of the Bulgarian Cultural and Heritage Center of Seattle.

The recorded events are available on the YouTube channel of Glagolnitsata.
